Governors Island

Governors Island is a 170 acre national park in the middle of New York Harbor. It was recently opened to the public, and it's just a 10 minute ferry ride from lower Manhattan. Chappy and I decided to visit...

The ferry was packed with fellow day-trippers.

There were lots of families, bird watching groups, breakdancers with boom boxes, and even the occasional gentleman with a banjo (in the yellow shirt):There are five miles of car-free sidewalks on the island, including a lovely 2+ mile loop on the water's edge. We rented bikes for the afternoon. It was a pleasant, easy way to see the entire island.

Chappy cycling down a shady lane:
Yours truly smiling by the shoreline:
The views of the harbor were stellar. Here's Chappy with Lady Liberty:
There are a ton of historical sites on the island. Here's a shot of Fort Jay, the oldest defensive structure on the island, built in 1794:
And here's the Greek Revival style Admiral's house:
There are also some modern attractions for tourists, like the flying trapeze:No - we didn't go on them. My orthopaedist would whack me upside the head if I even thought about doing that to my shoulders.

But I did go for a large vanilla soft-serve cherry dip cone:
I loved the view of all the boats on the water. It was also cool to see the familiar skyline of lower Manhattan from a different angle:

Monty Monday - So Close...

Monty loves nothing more than a game of fetch with a tennis ball. He's so crazy obsessed with tennis balls that we have to keep them locked up, otherwise he'll insist you throw the ball non-stop. He loves his usual afternoon game of tennis ball fetch, but he always looks for other opportunities to play throughout the day.

We were on our morning walk around the neighborhood and happened upon this -- a stray tennis ball behind the iron bars of a neighboring building's courtyard:Monty spied the ball, jumped for it, stuck his nose through the bars in an attempt to reach it, barked at it, whined to me, and then became so inconsolable I had to carry him away.

Don't worry - I took the little guy home and played an extra-long, spirited game of tennis ball fetch in our apartment.

Milly by Michelle Smith - Spring/Summer '11

It's Fashion Week here in NYC, so this afternoon I headed over to Lincoln Center for the Milly Spring/Summer '11 show.

Designer Michelle Smith said Peggy Guggenheim was her inspiration for this collection. Milly's combination of unexpected patterns and prints were a whimsical surprise -- I'm sure Peggy would have approved.

There was a lot of navy (my favorite color):
And some bright, girly floral prints:
With pops of preppy kelly green:
And many nautical-themed handbags and Turban-esque headwraps:
A bold mix of contrasting patterns were all over the runway:I loved it -- feminine, smart, and modern. Bravo Michelle.

And just for fun, here's a snap of me with my buddy (and Housewife Extraordinaire) Ramona Singer in the Mercedes-Benz Lounge after the show:For more information on Milly by Michelle Smith, please visit her website.

Storm King

Storm King is an outdoor art center/museum about a hour north of the city. There are 500 acres of rolling hills, giant fields, and woodlands, all dotted with sculptures and art installations. It's exquisite, and it's definitely worth a day trip.

A view of Mark di Suvero's 'Pyramidian' and 'Mozart's Birthday' on Storm King's expansive South Fields:
Roy Lichtenstein's 'Mermaid' rising from a small pond:
We rented mountain bikes for the day. You can walk the entire property - there are trails and paths - but we liked the speed/ease of cruising around on bikes:
Chappy atop 'Mother Peace':
Backbending in front of Alexander Calder's 'Black Flag':
Loving the view from Museum Hill:
Alexander Liberman's 'Adonai':
With Richard Serra's 'Schunnemunk Fork', my favorite piece in the park:
Chappy in the middle of 'Stream: A Folded Drawing', made of 3000 pieces of bamboo:
Playing peek-a-boo behind 'Gui':For more information on Storm King, please visit their website.

Monty Monday - Woods

Autumn is on its way to New England, so we're enjoying as many walks as possible sans sweaters before the cold sets in.

A happy Monty in the woods:

Thanks to each and every one of you that entered, and congratulations to Ryan; enjoy the book and all your preppy goodies.

Big ups to all the other readers who entered. I *loved* reading your preppy nickname entries. Here are a few of my favorites from your emails...

Wink

Women:

Binky (Fun fact: This was my father's childhood nickname for yours truly. I was not pleased with this nickname. After 2 years of him calling me Binky, I got a Jack Russell puppy and named her Binky so that I'd be rid of the nickname nonsense. Mission accomplished, and I was/am back to Mel. But it was close - I almost was a Binky for life.)

Thanks again for entering, and cheers to True Prep for offering us such a great giveaway!

Vienna

Vienna was an absolute home-run in my book. It's a decidedly civilized town that's big on culture (especially music), and I fell in love with it after one sip of Viennese coffee at Café Hawelka.

Here are some snaps from around town...

The grand Hofburg Palace in old Vienna -- so massive it took over 600 years to build:
Schonbrunn Palace, the Versailles of Vienna:
The formal gardens of Schonbrunn, worth a half-day stroll around the acres and acres of well-manicured flowers, trees, and winding paths:
Sacher Torte:This cake was so good I've been dreaming about it for the past week. It's got a hard chocolate shell, a spongy chocolate cake center, and a hint of fruity, jammy sweetness -- It's just exquisite. I'm looking into having one shipped to NYC for my 31st birthday.

The magnificent concert hall, Musikverein:
The impressive Spanish Riding School and its famous Lipizzaner stallions:
The bustling square of Stephansplatz, the geographic center of the city:I stayed nearby Stephansplatz and loved being in the thick of things.

The ornate Pulpit of John Capistrano on Stephansdom:
I ended the trip on a high note out at Grafenegg for a memorable evening of Beethoven:Ah Vienna, I can't wait to return for more Tafelspitz, more Grüner Veltliner, more Melange, and more music. Till soon I hope...

Continuing my 'hugging statues in Europe' series... Cozying up to a little angel in front of The Loreto:
Street meat smoking:
Roasted/barbecued pastry - sugary and warm and delicious:
