Governors Island
Governors Island is a 170 acre national park in the middle of New York Harbor. It was recently opened to the public, and it's just a 10 minute ferry ride from lower Manhattan. Chappy and I decided to visit...
The ferry was packed with fellow day-trippers.
There were lots of families, bird watching groups, breakdancers with boom boxes, and even the occasional gentleman with a banjo (in the yellow shirt):
There are five miles of car-free sidewalks on the island, including a lovely 2+ mile loop on the water's edge. We rented bikes for the afternoon. It was a pleasant, easy way to see the entire island.
Chappy cycling down a shady lane:
Yours truly smiling by the shoreline:
The views of the harbor were stellar. Here's Chappy with Lady Liberty:
There are a ton of historical sites on the island. Here's a shot of Fort Jay, the oldest defensive structure on the island, built in 1794:
And here's the Greek Revival style Admiral's house:
There are also some modern attractions for tourists, like the flying trapeze:
No - we didn't go on them. My orthopaedist would whack me upside the head if I even thought about doing that to my shoulders.
But I did go for a large vanilla soft-serve cherry dip cone:
I loved the view of all the boats on the water. It was also cool to see the familiar skyline of lower Manhattan from a different angle:
My happy Chappy on the ferry ride home:
